There are times when we need the words that others have given us. Times when our words fall short; when human words fall short; when my words fall short. My words don’t always come out well. They can come out in all kinds of sideways directions. So let us turn our hearts toward
God’s Word. Towards God’s Voice.
+A Responsory from the Psalms+
Show us your mercy, O Lord,
And grant us your salvation.
Your Word is a lantern to our feet,
And a light unto our path.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world.
For only in You can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care,
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth,
Your saving health among the nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten,
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God,
And renew us with Your Holy Spirit.
Let us pray…
Gracious God, the news of this week has torn at our hearts . We are walking through the valley of shadow. In anxiety we gather before You, our Rock and our Refuge. You are our comfort. You are our Hope. You know the sorrow of our hearts; as well as the anger and frustration within. Tend to our hearts now with your mercy, and open them to Your presence, your wisdom, your truth. We pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN.
Psalm 90 “A prayer of Moses, man of God”
“Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another.
Before the mountains were brought forth, or before the land and earth were born,
from age to age, You are God.
You turn us back to the dust and say:
‘Turn back, O children of earth’.
For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past,
like a watch in the night.
You sweep them away like a dream,
they fade away suddenly like the grass.
For we are consumed by Your anger;
we are overwhelmed by guilt before Your presence.
Our iniquities are exposed before You;
our secret sins come to light in Your countenance.
All our days pass away under your breath,
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
The span of our life is seventy years,
perhaps even eighty if we are strong.
Yet even then their span is toil and trouble,
for they pass quickly, and we are gone.
Who considers the power of Your wrath?
Who rightly fears Your indignation?
Therefore, teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a wise heart.
Make us glad as many days of our affliction,
and as many years as we have suffered adversity.
Show Your servants Your works O Lord,
and Your splendor to Your children.
May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us;
prosper the work of our hands;
prosper our handiwork.”
Psalm 20 “A Psalm of David; a prayer for leaders”
“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble,
the God of Jacob defend you;
send you help from his sanctuary,
strengthen you out of Zion;
may the Lord remember all your offerings,
accept your sacrifices;
grant you your heart’s desire,
and prosper all your plans.
Some put their trust in chariots, some in horses;
but we rely on the name of the Lord our God.
They collapse and fall,
but we will arise and stand upright.
O Lord, answer us when we call.”
May the word of God’s Voice guide you this week. Pastor John Hillmer
